Linda And Blessing

Linda met Blessing several years ago on a short-term mission trip to MCF. Our team of ladies was performing the play about the little lost lamb. During the play I noticed one small girl in the back row who was crying and looked terrified. At the end of the play, I thought about this little girl’s frightened response and sought out our Kenya host to see if she could tell me this child’s story. I was told “Blessing” was found by the local Nairobi police, abandoned on the side of the road like trash. She could not tell them her name, age, or the location of her family. The police stopped the MCF bus that was traveling in the area, and explained how they found this small child all alone and asked if they would rescue her. MCF staff immediately took her in and brought her to the world’s largest family.

Blessing was slowly being introduced to her new family when my US team arrived. She had only just been paired with a few other little girls at MCF when we presented our play. I thought no wonder she was overwhelmed. The day after our presentation, I saw Blessing standing by herself on the soccer field, watching the other children playing. I decided to say a quick pray to the Lord who provides all comfort, and approach this frightened child. I stood by her without saying a word. We just occasionally looked at each and after several tentative glances, we both smiled. My heart just melted. I softly engaged her in conversation, even though I was sure she did not understand me. She just watched my face as I talked on. After a few minutes, the kids were called to come to dinner, and I decided to get bold and picked her up and started to walk towards the dining area. To my delight, she snuggled down in my neck. It was at that moment I knew I would make inquires of how I could become more involved in this child’s life.

I started to sponsor Blessing as soon as I returned home through MCF – USA. The donated money helps to provide her with food, housing, medicine (if needed) and education. I did not see Blessing for a whole year, but I frequently prayed for her and periodically sent fun cards. As we approached MCF the next year, I wondered if I would recognize Blessing and was excited to see how she had progressed. As the large group of MCF children greeted our bus, I spotted Blessing right away. I was elated to see she was singing, smiling and laughing with the other children. When I made eye contact with her, she quickly flashed me a shy smile. I could readily see the transformation of this beautiful little girl.

I now have had the privilege of seeing Blessing several times a year. As I share her amazing progress with family and friends we are all blessed to see how Christ’s love can change the life of an abandoned child to a child that has a future.

Ephesians 3:20 – “Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
