Addressing Food Security Challenges in Yatta Sub-County
Isaiah 58:11 (NIV) – “The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
Yatta Sub-County—home to MCF Ndalani, MCF Yatta, and Dr. Charles Mully Secondary School—is an agricultural region that depends heavily on seasonal rainfall. But in 2025, the March-to-May rains brought only 30% of what was expected, with devastating consequences for food systems.
The lack of rain led to widespread crop failure. Staple crops like maize, beans, and vegetables either stunted or failed entirely. Key water sources—rivers, boreholes, and wells—have been critically depleted, affecting access to clean water for both people and livestock. Many farmers have reported losing over 70% of their expected harvests. Families are now facing both food insecurity and financial strain, while food prices continue to surge in local markets.
In response, MCF is providing emergency food relief to 250 of the most vulnerable families each month and making clean drinking water freely available to the wider community. We recognize the increased risk of waterborne disease in this season of scarcity, and we are doing all we can to respond with compassion and urgency.
We are deeply grateful for your continued partnership. Because of your prayers and support, hundreds of families have been able to put food on the table and drink safe water in their time of greatest need.
Please pray that the Lord would grant wisdom, resources, and strategic partnerships to expand sustainable agriculture initiatives. Our desire is to build long-term resilience in the community and reduce vulnerability to future droughts.
